About this Issue

Ghost Rider #19 marks the first appearance of Suicide, a character defined by his Faustian bargain with Mephisto that grants him near-indestructible regenerative abilities — making him a conceptually fitting antagonist for a series steeped in demonic dealmaking and the price of power. The issue deepens the thematic texture of Howard Mackie's Danny Ketch run by running two parallel Mephisto-brokered arrangements simultaneously: Ghost Rider's relentless pursuit of the demon-powered serial killer Zodiak, and an unnamed man's fateful deal with the devil himself. As the first chapter of a two-part arc that closes out the book's second year, it crystallizes Mackie's approach of weaving morally weighted supporting characters into the Spirit of Vengeance's world, expanding the cast of Mephisto's pawns well beyond Ghost Rider himself.

History

The 1990 Danny Ketch Ghost Rider series was itself a hard-won project: writer Howard Mackie has recounted that Marvel's sales department actively tried to block the book before launch, and it was editor Bobbie Chase and editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco who pushed it through to publication. By issue #19, Mackie and artist Mark Texeira — who had taken over full pencilling duties from co-creator Javier Saltares — had established a consistent creative partnership that defined the visual and tonal identity of the run, with Texeira's heavily textured, shadow-drenched line work providing the atmospheric backbone for Mackie's street-level horror stories. The issue sits within the second year of a series that had, against many internal expectations, become one of Marvel's strongest-selling titles of the early 1990s.
