Geiger was conceived by writer Geoff Johns and artist/co-creator Gary Frank directly after completing DC's Doomsday Clock, with the pair describing their inspiration as the early Image era of creator-owned characters. The series launched in April 2021 through Image Comics and later became a cornerstone of Ghost Machine, the creator-owned and operated media collective founded in October 2023 by Johns, Frank, and collaborators including Bryan Hitch, Jason Fabok, and others, all of whom co-own their characters. The ongoing second volume, which carries the numbering that reaches #23, began in 2024 under the Ghost Machine banner, published through Image. Brad Anderson serves as colorist and Rob Leigh as letterer throughout the run.
