About this Issue

Geiger #17 (August 27, 2025) is a meaningful chapter in one of creator-owned comics' most ambitious ongoing experiments — Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's post-apocalyptic saga set within Ghost Machine's shared 'Unnamed' universe. The issue advances the central mystery of the Unknown War that reduced America to a radioactive wasteland, with a newly introduced threat pursuing Tariq Geiger's son that may finally unlock answers seeded across the entire series run. It also demonstrates the creative stamina of a title that has sustained a densely plotted, character-driven narrative across two distinct volume launches (2021 and 2024), bridging its pre-Ghost Machine origins with its role as a cornerstone of an ambitious creator-owned shared universe. The split-art structure of this issue — a guest penciller handling the bulk of the story while co-creator Gary Frank returns for the epilogue — is itself a snapshot of how the Ghost Machine editorial team has managed high-frequency publication without disrupting storytelling momentum.

History

Geiger launched in 2021 as the first creator-owned collaboration between writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank, the pair having spent years together on flagship DC work including Doomsday Clock and Batman: Earth One. Gary Frank originally referred to the character internally as the 'Atomic Cowboy,' and the series was conceived from the outset as the foundation of a broader creator-owned universe. When Ghost Machine — a fully creator-owned and operated media company co-founded by Johns, Frank, and peers including Bryan Hitch, Jason Fabok, and Francis Manapul — launched publicly at New York Comic Con in October 2023, Geiger became the anchor title of its 'Unnamed' shared universe, with the ongoing second volume relaunching in April 2024. By issue #17, the series was deep into its sustained run, with Brad Anderson serving as colorist throughout and guest artists rotating in to support the demanding monthly cadence Gary Frank's hyper-detailed draftsmanship requires.
