About this Issue

Garfield #1 (2024) marks the first issue of a second distinct KaBOOM! miniseries era for the character, arriving more than a decade after KaBOOM! launched its original Garfield monthly run in May 2012. Its genuine historical footnote is that it transplants the redesigned CGI character model from Alcon Entertainment's 2024 animated film onto the printed page for the first time, giving multiple artists their own interpretive crack at that screen look rather than Jim Davis's classic strip style. The anthology format — two self-contained stories per issue — also represents a deliberate structural departure from both Davis's single-strip origin and the standard single-story monthly comic, attempting to recreate a short-form comedic rhythm in a long-form medium. As a movie tie-in that arrived in comic shops roughly three months after the film's theatrical run had largely concluded, it also became an instructive case study in the logistical challenges of synchronizing licensed comics publishing with Hollywood release windows.

History

BOOM! Studios' KaBOOM! imprint had first secured the Garfield comics license in May 2012, launching a monthly series written by Mark Evanier (Garfield and Friends) and illustrated by Jim Davis's longtime assistant Gary Barker; that run spawned TPB collections, holiday specials, and limited series including Garfield: Homecoming (2018) before going on hiatus. The 2024 series was announced and previewed by BOOM! Studios on July 12, 2024, explicitly positioned as a tie-in to Alcon Entertainment's The Garfield Movie (Sony Pictures, May 2024), with the creative team assembled around two writers drawn from all-ages and webcomics backgrounds: Ryan Estrada (I Climbed Kilimanjaro) and Sarah Graley (Kim Reaper, Minecraft comics). All four issues of the miniseries were subsequently collected in the trade paperback Garfield: Family Style, released in April 2025.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published August 7, 2024 by BOOM! Studios under the KaBOOM! all-ages imprint; a four-issue limited series (issues #2–4 shipped monthly through November 13, 2024).
  • First comic series to adapt the character design from Alcon Entertainment/Sony Pictures' 2024 CGI animated film rather than Jim Davis's original newspaper-strip artwork.
  • Contains two stories: 'Midnight Munchies' (written by Ryan Estrada, art by Axur Eneas, letters by Stef Purenins) and 'Jon Minus Garfield' (written and illustrated by Sarah Graley, letters by Stef Purenins).
  • 'Jon Minus Garfield' functions as a partial prologue to the 2024 film, following Jon after Garfield's mysterious disappearance, and ends with a direct prompt to watch The Garfield Movie — notable because the film had already left most theaters by the comic's August on-sale date.
  • Main cover by JJ Harrison & Venture (Adventure Time); variant covers by Jay Stephens (The Invisibles) and Goñi Montes (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers); retailer incentive variants include 1:10 and 1:20 ratio covers as well as blank sketch covers.
  • The series is catalogued as Volume 2 of the KaBOOM! Garfield run on collector databases, distinguishing it from the 2012–2016 ongoing series anchored by Mark Evanier and Gary Barker.
  • All four issues were collected in the trade paperback Garfield: Family Style, released April 2025.
  • Received mixed critical notices (aggregated score of 6.3 from three reviews at Comic Book Round Up); reviewers praised Axur Eneas's art for evoking Davis's strip style while noting the anthology's uneven Garfield-to-page-time ratio.
