About this Issue

Gambit (Vol. 3) #4 holds a distinct spot in the series' mythology as the issue containing the first cameo appearance of Amanda Mueller, a.k.a. Black Womb — a near-immortal figure whose covert genetic project would eventually be revealed as foundational to the origins of both Gambit and the Summers bloodline, and whose machinations tie directly into Mr. Sinister's long game across the X-Men titles. The appearance is a fleeting dream-sequence glimpse, with Fontanelle probing Carter Ryking's childhood memories of an old woman muttering the name 'Black Womb' at the Alamogordo facility, but it plants a seed that the series spends years paying off. The issue also marks the first in-series team-up between Gambit and Blade, an organic genre collision that brought the vampire-hunter's street-level world crashing into the New Orleans Thieves' Guild mythology the ongoing series was busy constructing. That crossover was part of Nicieza's conscious effort to expand Gambit's rogue's gallery and thematic canvas beyond the X-Men's usual cosmic stakes.

History

The issue was written by Fabian Nicieza with pencils by Steve Skroce, the creative team responsible for the entire first run of Gambit Vol. 3, which launched in December 1998 and ran for 25 issues plus two annuals. The series was the first ongoing solo title for the character after two prior limited series, and emerged from a deliberate X-office strategy of shifting focus toward solo-star books rather than continuing to expand the already-crowded team titles. Editor Mark Powers oversaw the book under editor-in-chief Bob Harras, and the series developed a densely layered, multi-threat structure — simultaneously juggling the New Son mystery, the X-Cutioner's vendetta, Fontanelle's dream-surveillance, and the New Orleans Guild politics — which made each issue a chapter in a genuinely long-form serial.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Cover-dated May 1999; published as part of Gambit Vol. 3 (the character's first ongoing solo series), written by Fabian Nicieza and penciled by Steve Skroce, with inks by Rob Hunter and Scott Hanna among others.
  • Contains the first cameo appearance of Amanda Mueller, known as Black Womb — a virtually immortal woman who led Project Black Womb, a covert Sinister-connected genetic program whose full significance to Gambit's origins would not be fully revealed until later issues of the same series.
  • The Black Womb appearance is a dream-sequence glimpse: Fontanelle psychically intrudes on Carter Ryking's childhood memory of a mysterious old woman at the Alamogordo, New Mexico nuclear research facility — the same site connected to the fathers of Charles Xavier and Cain Marko.
  • Issue title is 'Old Wounds, Fresh Blood!' and features the first in-series encounter between Gambit and Blade the Vampire Hunter, who initially attacks Gambit in a New Orleans graveyard after mistaking his red eyes for those of a vampire.
  • Key antagonists appearing or advanced in this issue include X-Cutioner (Carl Denti), who uses this chapter to plan his use of Rogue as bait to lure Gambit into a trap, and the Pig, who dispatches the Mengo Brothers to pursue Shirow Ishihara in New Orleans.
  • The vampire threat in this issue centers on Francois Chicault — a former Assassins Guild member turned undead — who has been preying on children held in the Antiquary's collection; Gambit and Jean-Luc LeBeau ally with Blade to destroy him.
  • The Alamogordo/Carter Ryking subplot in this issue picks up a dangling thread from X-Men (Vol. 2) #12–13, tying Gambit's emerging mystery back into Xavier's hidden pre-X-Men history.
  • The series as a whole was later collected in the trade paperback X-Men: Gambit — The Complete Collection, making issue #4 available in collected form; the series was canceled after 25 issues due to an editorial decision to reduce the volume of X-Men-related titles.
