In G.I. Joe #45, Ripcord takes a reckless leap into danger, parachuting onto Cobra Island to uncover the truth behind the missing Candy—only to be wounded and replaced by Zartan in a deadly deception. As Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes vow vengeance for the murder of The Hard Master, Hawk assumes command of the G.I. Joe team following Austin’s departure after a heart attack. Written by Larry Hama and illustrated by Rod Whigham, with inks by Andy Mushynsky and colors by George Roussos, this issue blends high-stakes infiltration with personal vendettas, all under Mike Zeck’s striking cover art and John Beatty’s dynamic inks.

Ripcord disobeys orders and parachutes onto Cobra Island looking for info on the missing Candy (Prof. Appel also wants the same information from the Commander), and in a fight with Zartan, Ripcord is wounded, with Zartan taking his place to fool the Joes who have been sent to retrieve him. Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes learn that Zartan killed The Hard Master and head to Cobra Island for revenge as Hawk is made Commander In Chief of the G.I. Joe team due to Austin stepping down after his heart attack.
