“Weird Science”

John Byrne's cover for this 2008 IDW series declares the stakes plainly: four figures — including a flame-wreathed figure and a blue-glowing figure with arms raised — are caught in the massive, clawed grip of a monstrous hand, all set against the looming shadow of Svengal's face. A young blond character in white struggles helplessly to the left as a dark-haired woman reaches out between them, the whole image radiating that confident, kinetic energy Byrne brought to superhero storytelling. Wayne Osborne and Byrne's collaboration on FX looks to be hitting its stride by issue four, with "Weird Science" promising plenty of powered-up chaos to match the cover's vivid promise.
