“Pie-Face”

A sunny July 1945 ten-cent treat from Marvel, this issue of Animated Funny Comic-Tunes delivers exactly the kind of cheerful mischief the title promises. The cover — rendered by Milt Stein and inked by David Gantz — shows a green, top-hatted figure lounging lazily on a haystack and wishing for "peace and quiet," blissfully unaware that just below him, a character labeled Ziggy and a round-headed pal are gleefully discovering a very large, very snappy lobster on the end of a fishing line. It's a perfectly timed gag setup that captures the warm, anything-can-happen spirit of postwar funny-animal comics at their most delightful.
