“Freddy the Hero”

This 1963 Charlton charmer captures a perfectly silly dog-show mix-up right on its cover: a proud young man tries to award the "Best Dog in Show" ribbon to a flustered woman who is desperately insisting — as her speech bubble makes clear — that the prize belongs to the enormous, tongue-lolling red dog beside her, not to her. Jon D'Agostino's clean, expressive linework gives the whole scene a warm comedic bounce, with two bystanders in the background looking on in bemused confusion. At 12 cents, Freddy #40 is a cheerful slice of early-'60s all-ages humor that delivers its laughs before you even open the cover.
