Frank Merriwell clashes with the brash Dick Hammer after standing up for a waitress being pestered at a local soda shop—and when Hammer takes offense, a boxing match in the gymnasium becomes inevitable. With Coach Anderson refereeing and the whole Yale campus watching, Frank must face off against an undefeated athlete who outweighs him and has two years of victories on his record. Kanvasback is supposed to fight Crusher Kale next week, but ticket sales are tanking—nobody wants to pay to watch what they're sure will be a one-sided beating. When his manager Mal Arkey despairs over their empty gate receipts, Kanvasback hatches what he thinks is a brilliant scheme: stage a fake rescue at the lake to grab headlines and become a public hero.
