The main story follows a G.I. named Joey who throws away his helmet during a night bombardment on the battlefield, and through a series of lucky maneuvers manages to keep firing his machine gun despite the chaos around him. A second story features a man who, while traveling and flying over Europe during WWII with contempt for Nazis, is forced to help a desperate stranger at a hotel and becomes entangled with German killers in black, ultimately being threatened by a Gestapo captain regarding his island and country.

A young RAF pilot crashes behind enemy lines, clinging to consciousness as his mind drifts to a stranger he once helped escape the Gestapo in Vienna years before. When he awakens in a hospital bed, he discovers that the brilliant surgeon who saved his life is that very same man—and their paths have intersected again in the most unexpected way. "The Face" is a poignant tale of how a single act of compassion echoes across time and circumstance, reminding us that kindness leaves marks we may never fully understand.

In the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, a young lieutenant initially dismisses Major Paul Allison, a soft-spoken medical officer, as weak and ineffectual—until Japanese forces close in and the true measure of the Major's character begins to reveal itself. As prisoners of war enduring a brutal camp, the lieutenant watches Allison work around the clock to help the dying, negotiate with their captors, and stand up for those under threat, all while the prisoners begin to finally understand what quiet courage really means. When a Japanese commandant's attention turns dangerous toward a newly arrived nurse, the Major makes one final, desperate choice that forces even his harshest critic to reckon with what he's always been.
