Flashpoint: Frankenstein & the Creatures of the Unknown #1

Part of DC's sweeping 2011 Flashpoint event, this opening chapter drops readers into a wartime monster mash with a cover by Doug Mahnke that demands attention: Frankenstein — green-skinned, barrel-chested, and dressed in a military coat — stands front and center, flanked by a motley squad of creatures while Nazi soldiers and snarling beasts pile up beneath their boots. A winged figure and a sword-wielding companion round out the chaos behind him, promising that whatever the Creatures of the Unknown are, they don't go down easy. Jeff Lemire and Ibraim Roberson kick off this three-issue series with a story cheekily subtitled "Weird War Tales!" — and the cover makes that title feel entirely earned.
