The concluding chapter of Will Pfeifer and Jill Thompson's Vertigo miniseries arrives with a cover that perfectly captures its darkly comic spirit: graduation caps sail against a burning orange sky as a crowd of robed figures throw their hands skyward — and among those raised hands, one is unmistakably a skeletal, bony claw. Thompson's artwork wrings something genuinely unsettling out of what should be a moment of pure celebration, making the title "Pomp & Circumstance Beyond Our Control" feel exactly right. A fitting send-off for this mature-readers series from 1999.
