"Replacement" follows Pfc. Don Lyons, the only son of Captain Ran Bogacs, who must prove himself in combat to earn a chance at leadership training after initially failing to qualify. When the squad is scheduled to be relieved and rotated to the rear, Sergeant Correa decides to give Lyons one more opportunity in the field, offering him a month of additional combat duty to prove his worth. Otto Garig, a German boy who had been the outfit's mascot before being captured as a spy, is encountered with German soldiers, leading to conflict and reveals that enemy forces are planning to attack the position. In the climax, Lyons and the Marines prepare for battle as the Germans advance, with the squad determined to hold their ground.
