"Takatak" follows a Japanese pilot who panics during an encounter with an American P-38, forgetting his training as one engine catches fire; a Zero comes to his aid in a dogfight. "The Voodoo Charm" features Captain Dane Yarrow responding to a scramble signal at a fighter-interceptor field; he encounters a hostile bogey above him and shoots it down, but struggles with the distinction between military glory-seeking and his responsibilities to his family, ultimately deciding against pursuing further headlines and medals.
