“Chapter 20: The Outsider”
About this Issue

Feral #20 serves as the dramatic conclusion to the series' fourth story arc — collected in Feral Vol. 4: Pet City — bringing the extended Pet City cannibal-cat power struggle to a decisive and irreversible turning point. The issue resolves the arc-long conflict between Elsie and Lucky the Tomcat's authoritarian grip on the Pet City survivors, with major character consequences that the publisher itself promised would leave 'nothing the same after this issue.' As the final chapter before the wholly silent, crossover-seeding Feral #21, issue #20 acts as a dramatic bridge: it clears the Pet City stage and sets the entire cast adrift in time for the Stray Dogs convergence that would define the series' second half. The series itself had already earned an American Library Association Outstanding Comics Award for Young Adults Series Honor (2025), cementing Feral's status as one of the more critically recognized ongoing horror comics of its era.

History

Feral is a creator-owned ongoing series from Image Comics written by Tony Fleecs, illustrated by Trish Forstner and Tone Rodriguez, and colored by Brad Simpson — the same core team behind the 2021 hit Stray Dogs, which sold close to one million copies across all formats. The series launched in March 2024 and is set in the same shared universe as Stray Dogs, though with a markedly more visceral survival-horror tone. Issue #20, released January 28, 2026, was the final chapter of the fourth arc before Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner pivoted to a completely silent issue (#21) as a deliberate homage to the famous wordless G.I. Joe #21 (1985) by Larry Hama — a creative choice Fleecs cited as only possible because of the sustained retailer and reader support the ongoing series had built.

Trivia · 7 facts

  • Written by Tony Fleecs; illustrated by Trish Forstner and Tone Rodriguez; colored by Brad Simpson — the full creative team behind Stray Dogs (2021).
  • Issue #20 is the concluding chapter of the 'Pet City' story arc (Arc 4), collected in Feral Vol. 4: Pet City TPB (released March 4, 2026), which collects Feral #16–20.
  • The issue delivers the resolution of Lucky the Tomcat's antagonist arc: Lucky, who had become a power-hungry ruler of the Pet City cannibal colony backed by his Rottweiler Moosh, is described by the Feral wiki as being 'blinded by his power over Pet City and almost dying because of it' in this issue.
  • Elsie is banished from Pet City during the issue's events; a confrontational supernatural or metaphorical entity tells her she belongs alone and that the danger threatening Pet City is no longer her problem — setting up her arc reset for the following story.
  • A rabid cat named William emerges inside the store and kills another cat, triggering a collapse of Pet City's order and forcing the surviving cats to flee and ultimately find themselves imprisoned — events that directly lead into Arc 5.
  • The issue shipped with multiple cover editions: Cover A (Tony Fleecs/Trish Forstner), Cover B (Tony Fleecs variant), Cover C (1:10 Tone Rodriguez Virgin Variant), and a Vault 35 Comics & Collectibles exclusive by AC Canales.
  • Feral as a series received the American Library Association Outstanding Comics Award for Young Adults Series Honor Book (2025), and has been translated into French; the shared Fleecs/Forstner universe expanded further beginning with Feral #21, which introduced Stray Dogs characters into the Feral continuity.
