"Captain Blood" by Raphael Sabatini follows the swashbuckling adventures of the titular character as he navigates life at sea and encounters with colonial governors. After arriving in Tortuga, Blood is offered a commission by Governor Monsieur d'Ogeron to legitimize his activities, but declines the offer to remain independent. The story continues with Blood engaging in naval combat against a Spanish captain aboard the ship Milagrosa, and later picking up English survivors whose ships were sunk by the French squadron under Baron de Rivaldo, only to learn that King James has been deposed and replaced by King William, dashing Blood's hopes of returning home as a free man.
