Fantomen upptäcker att någon rivit ur sidor ur krönikorna. Samtidigt i USA återberättar familjen Prescott historien om förfadern sir James Prescott som 1886 hittade ett dokument som visade vägen till farao Charebhoteps andra gravsättning. 1887 begav sir James sig iväg på en expedition tillsammans med den mystiske Userhat – och försvann spårlöst. Senare samma kväll hör Diana ett skrik från familjen Prescotts "egyptiska rum" och hittar Julie mördad. Plötsligt griper någon tag i Diana bakifrån!
