När bandarhövdingen Burans dotter Korpen blir tillfångatagen av slavhandlare beger sig den 16:e Fantomen till USA för att rädda henne. Fantomen får oväntad hjälp av författaren Edgar Allan Poe, som dessvärre dör på kuppen. Fantomen söker upp plantageägaren Reynolds och tvingar honom att frige alla sina slavar, inklusive Korpen.
