"Williams, Private Investigator" by Ray Thayer depicts detective Dan Williams investigating racketeers engaged in bootlegging operations, working with a liquor dealer named Toomey to expose gang leader Chris Toomey's illegal enterprise and stop their bootleg shipments. The Sphinx, a caped vigilante, leaps through a skylight to battle criminals, evades a police trap on a rooftop, and uses a water tank and extension ladder as weapons to escape and overcome his pursuers.
