“[The Cross-Time Caper Part Five] Warlord”

The Cross-Time Caper rolls on in Excalibur #16 (1989), and Alan Davis and Paul Neary's cover poses a deliciously strange question: "Kurt Wagner — Warlord of…?" Against a vast planetary backdrop, a sword-brandishing Nightcrawler stands in full barbarian warlord regalia alongside a regal blue-skinned companion, while a young red-haired warrior, a woman perched atop a giant crocodile, and a defeated red-armored foe sprawled at his feet complete the otherworldly tableau. Chris Claremont and Alan Davis are clearly having a grand time steering Excalibur through alternate realities, and this pulp-fantasy-tinged chapter looks like one of the saga's most imaginative detours yet.
