“Power Down Chapter One”

Issue #26 of Brian K. Vaughan's Ex Machina opens the "Power Down" arc with a cover by Tony Harris that immediately sets a tense, layered mood. The Great Machine — goggled and gear-adorned, wearing his signature harness — stands in the foreground looking wary, while a silver-haired older woman in flowing robes reaches down to lift his helmet from behind, her expression carrying a knowing, almost triumphant confidence. Warm amber tones and ghostly background imagery give the whole composition an unsettling, mythic quality that makes this 2007 WildStorm entry hard to put down.
