“Wheel Zeal”

The eternal triangle plays out in fine comic form on this 1977 Archie Series cover: while Betty watches with a wrench in hand as a frustrated Archie wrestles with the engine of his jalopy, Veronica has clearly found a much more appealing use of Archie's time — pulling him in for a close moment by the tree, toolbox and car troubles be darned. The cover's punny speech bubbles ("Betty, Archie's having trouble with his clutch!" / "Veronica doesn't seem to think so!") set up the double-meaning humor that Everything's Archie does so well. At 35 cents, issue #59 delivers the breezy, lovable chaos of Riverdale in full 1970s bell-bottom glory.
