Eugène #2
A rainy city night sets the mood perfectly for this second volume of Jan Dirk Barreveld's Dutch humor series, with the cover showing a frazzled-looking fellow clinging to a bus stop sign while a crowded shelter packed with an eccentric assortment of characters — including what appears to be a frog among the commuters — offers him no refuge. Barreveld handles every aspect of the book himself, from writing and drawing to inking and coloring, and that singular creative vision shines through in the expressive cartooning and moody urban atmosphere. If you enjoyed the first Eugène album, Zwaar Weer ("Heavy Weather") looks like a worthy and thoroughly entertaining follow-up.
