Elektra #1
Elektra #1 (2014) gave Marvel's most complex female assassin her most character-driven solo vehicle since Frank Miller invented her, deliberately centering Elektra's own psychology and moral agency rather than using her as a supporting player in someone else's story. The debut introduced three new characters simultaneously — the cannibalistic memory-absorbing villain Bloody Lips, the enigmatic underworld fixer known as the Matchmaker, and the mythic assassin Cape Crow — all of whom were purpose-built to explore the shadowy corners of Marvel's mercenary ecosystem rather than recycle Daredevil mythology. Mike Del Mundo's painted interior artwork, previously seen mainly on covers, transformed the book into one of the most visually distinctive titles of the All-New Marvel NOW! initiative, establishing a template of painterly, expressionistic sequential storytelling that influenced subsequent prestige-format Marvel work. The series represented a deliberate creative reset: Elektra as the sole protagonist of her own story, her trauma and identity examined on their own terms rather than as a function of Matt Murdock's narrative.

The series was first announced in October 2013 as part of the All-New Marvel NOW! initiative with Zeb Wells — who had previous history with the character — set to write, and Mike Del Mundo attached as artist from the outset. Wells had to withdraw before a single page was written because a television project he had developed was picked up, and Marvel announced in December 2013 that W. Haden Blackman, fresh from a celebrated run co-writing DC's Batwoman, would take over as writer; the launch was also pushed back one month, from March to April 2014. Crucially, Blackman chose not to read Wells's pitch, building his story entirely from scratch while retaining a character design Del Mundo had already sketched — specifically Bloody Lips, whose appearance Blackman then developed with an entirely new origin, power set, and motivation. Editor Sana Amanat shepherded the book, with Axel Alonso serving as editor-in-chief.
