“War Torn”

The cover of this New 52 entry, illustrated by Juan Doe, delivers an unsettling propaganda-poster atmosphere — a confined, barbed-wire-topped corridor whose walls are plastered with images of armored, alien-faced figures above the repeated command "SUBMIT." On the floor, two of those same figures face off in what looks like a tense standoff, the word "SUBMIT" emblazoned beneath them in bold, floor-spanning letters. James Robinson and Nicola Scott's "War Torn" story arc is clearly building toward something grim and oppressive, and this striking 2013 cover sets that mood with real conviction.
