“The Fallen Hero”

Dreadstar #20 from Marvel's Epic Comics imprint presents one of 1985's most striking covers, courtesy of Jim Starlin and inker Sam de la Rosa: a seemingly endless wave of identical yellow-green humanoid figures completely engulfs a small band of colorful heroes — a red-haired woman in purple, a white-haired figure in blue, a purple-skinned alien, and others — who struggle desperately against the overwhelming tide. The sheer scale of that churning mass of bodies makes the odds feel genuinely hopeless, setting a tense, foreboding tone perfectly matched to the issue's title, "The Fallen Hero.
