Few comics dare to make a stack of syrup-drenched pancakes their cover image, yet Doomsday Clock #4 pulls it off with quiet, almost unsettling confidence. Gary Frank renders this ordinary diner plate — butter melting over a tall stack, dark syrup pooling onto the rim, a lone fork resting nearby on a checkered tablecloth — with the same meticulous craft he'd bring to any superhero splash page, which makes the mundane image feel oddly loaded. Issue four of this twelve-part 2018 DC series, written by Geoff Johns with colors by Brad Anderson, proves that sometimes the most intriguing covers are the ones that tell you the least.
