About this Issue

Doom Academy #5 is the capstone of a five-issue limited series that stands as the first sustained Marvel story to transplant the Strange Academy concept — a magic school for young sorcerers — from Doctor Strange's stewardship into the authoritarian hands of Doctor Doom as the new Sorcerer Supreme, directly dramatizing what it means to study under a tyrant. As issue #5 of 5, it delivers the series' climactic confrontation between Doom and his students, resolving the fairy-tale-monster invasion storyline while cementing Doom's judgment over the next generation of Marvel's mystic practitioners. The series as a whole occupies a meaningful structural role in the 'One World Under Doom' publishing event, exploring its themes of power, compliance, and adolescent identity through a younger, more YA-inflected lens than its event-book companions — and this finale is where those thematic threads pay off.

In Doom Academy #5, the students and their new allies stand triumphant after repelling a wave of demons and monsters summoned from a cursed book, only to be whisked away to the Dark Dimension by Doyle. Doom arrives to acknowledge their courage, and in a quiet moment, Zoe and Greta share a heartfelt kiss. Written by MacKenzie Cadenhead and illustrated by Pascual Ferry with colors by Edgar Delgado and letters by VC's Clayton Cowles, the cover by Pablo Villalobos captures the eerie intensity of the moment.

History

The Doom Academy series was announced at the Women of Marvel Panel at New York Comic Con 2024, with writer MacKenzie Cadenhead — a former Marvel editor who developed young-reader content before transitioning to authorship — and artist Pasqual Ferry, who had recently illustrated Doctor Strange. The series was conceived as a direct sequel to the 2020–2022 Strange Academy and its 'Finals' follow-up, rerouted through the narrative consequences of the 2024 Blood Hunt crossover, in which Doctor Doom used the Strange Academy students to help him seize the Sorcerer Supreme mantle from Doctor Strange. Cadenhead has spoken about deliberately mining older Doom lore for new student characters with Latverian ties, while collaborating with guest artist João Lemos — recognized for his research into Eastern European folklore — to illustrate the fantasy-realm sequences that run through the series and climax in issue #5.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Doom Academy #5 is the final issue of a five-issue limited series (of 5), published June 25, 2025, with a cover date of August 2025.
  • The issue is written by MacKenzie Cadenhead, with interior art by Pasqual Ferry (and guest art credited to Diogenes Neves in the finale), coloring by Edgar Delgado (series colorist), and a main cover by Pablo Villalobos.
  • The series — and this issue — serves as a tie-in to Marvel's 'One World Under Doom' publishing event, anchored by the premise that Doctor Doom became Sorcerer Supreme during the 2024 Blood Hunt crossover and relocated Strange Academy from New Orleans to Latveria, rebranding it Doom Academy.
  • The plot of issue #5, titled 'Judgment of Doom,' resolves the arc in which Zoe Laveau and her classmates accidentally unleash monsters from the Latverian Fairy Tale Land into the main Marvel universe (Earth-616), forcing a direct reckoning with Doctor Doom himself.
  • Zoe Laveau — a descendant of Marie Laveau with voodoo-rooted powers, first introduced in Strange Academy #1 (2020) — serves as the primary protagonist of the Doom Academy series, with Cadenhead citing her identity struggles as central to the story's thematic core.
  • The series introduced new original student characters with Latverian ties alongside returning Strange Academy students, with Doom Academy #1 marking the first appearances of characters including Marta, Scoop, and Drulinda within the school's student body.
  • Variant covers for issue #5 include a Woo-Chul Lee Zoey Laveau variant, a 1:50 Woo-Chul Lee Zoey Laveau virgin variant, and a Ron Lim variant.
  • The complete Doom Academy #1–5 run was collected in a trade paperback by Penguin Random House (ISBN 9781302961688).
