Donjon Monsters #4

From the Donjon Monsters series comes this 2011 Dutch-language edition subtitled "De zwarte heer" — "The Black Lord" — brought to life by writer-artist team Lewis Trondheim, Joann Sfar, and Stéphane Blanquet, whose cover work is on full display here. The cover presents a striking image of a cloaked, bird-like figure standing on a stone parapet high above floating rocky islands, gazing toward a shadowy archway that opens onto a glowing staircase — an image that radiates mystery and quiet menace. Blanquet's distinctive, somewhat unsettling style gives the dungeon architecture and its solitary occupant a wonderfully eerie weight.
