Don Winslow and Red Pennington accept an invitation to a society dance aboard the yacht Skylark, only to find the event under threat from a gang of impostors disguised as the orchestra. As the real band is held captive, Don must uncover the criminals' plan while the phony musicians prepare to steal the guests' valuables.

Don Winslow and his fellow Coast Guard officer Red are on a West Coast assignment when Red becomes infatuated with the idea of becoming a movie star after meeting a flashy self-proclaimed talent scout named Gabby Lee. As Red dives headfirst into a series of increasingly absurd acting drills—memorizing entire books, chasing runaway horses, and scaling fire escapes—Don begins to suspect the scout is a fraud, leading to a showdown at the Waverly Hotel where the truth is finally revealed.

When a sailor claims to know the location of a sunken treasure, his captain drags him on a wild goose chase to find it—only to discover the chest is empty, its contents long gone through a hole meant to drain water. The captain, furious, orders the sailor to stay underwater until every coin is recovered, turning a dream of riches into a slippery, soggy ordeal.

Don Winslow and Red Pennington arrive at Skippers Manor after receiving a telegram about the death of Captain Russel, who has left his entire estate—including a strong box containing $10,000—to Pennington in his will. As the night unfolds, the captain’s three nephews, Norton, Owen, and Paul, grow suspicious of the inheritance, and one by one, they vanish—only to be found dead or injured, with the strong box missing. With the lawyer also dead and the box’s contents a mystery, Don and Red must unravel a deadly web of deception before another life is lost.
