Doc Savage #17
Part of DC's First Wave line, this issue drops Doc Savage into a tense standoff that spans the ages — the cover by J.G. Jones shows a crouching, battle-ready Doc in the foreground, arrows bristling in the ground around him, while a sword-wielding Mongol warrior charges forward on horseback from a dust-shrouded cavalry behind. The sepia-toned painting gives the whole scene a cinematic, almost mythic weight that suits "Raise the Khan, Chapter Five: Moving Targets" perfectly. With J.G. Jones writing and Phil Winslade on art, this 2011 series continues to blend pulp adventure with something genuinely grand in scope.
