Doc Savage #16
Part of DC's First Wave pulp-hero initiative, Doc Savage #16 (2011) carries the story arc "Raise the Kahn, Chapter Four: Cat and Mouse" — and J. G. Jones's cover art makes clear that the Man of Bronze is in serious trouble. The painted-style image shows a bound but defiant Doc Savage straining against his rope restraints while surrounded by a gang of brutish, primitive figures — the Neanderthal Mob of the issue's subtitle — armed with clubs and primitive weapons, with a composed blonde woman in a military-style jacket standing amid the chaos. Written by J. G. Jones with art by Phil Winslade, this is pulp adventure at its most visceral, the kind of cover that makes you want to find out how Doc gets out of this one.
