DNAgents #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis volume collects the earliest adventures of the DNAgents, a team of genetically engineered superheroes created by writer/artist Mark Evanier. Originally published in the 1980s, these stories follow the young superhuman protagonists as they navigate their origins and the corporate entity that created them. This 2004 edition from About Comics gathers the initial issues of the series, presenting the foundational arc of the team's early struggles and identity.
"Born Orphans" kicks off DNAgents #1 with a high-stakes showdown as Alexi Vlasov hijacks Sham's body to pilot the massive Mega-Man and obliterate Matrix, Inc. headquarters—leaving behind a trail of destruction and uncertainty. As the dust settles, the team grapples with shocking revelations about their origins, including Surge’s possible connection to Lucius and the unsettling truth that their pasts may have been erased along with the research that created them. Written by Mark Evanier and illustrated by Will Meugniot, with inks by Al Gordon and letters by Carrie McCarthy, the issue's cover by Meugniot captures the moment’s intensity, all set in a world where identity is as fragile as memory.

Alexi Vlasov uses Sham's body to power a giant robot body he calls Mega-Man and uses it to destroy Matrix, Inc. headquarters. When Sham escapes, Vlasov appears to die in the resulting explosion. After Luger manages to kill Angela, Surge learns from Lucius that she was Proto-1, grown using the DNA of the real Angela who had been murdered eleven years earlier. Lucius also suggests that Surge was grown from his own DNA after Harden tells the group that Vlasov's attack has destroyed the recorded research used to create them, making Lucius' claim impossible to verify.
