DMZ #20 brings us the third chapter of the "Friendly Fire" arc, and Brian Wood's cover design is striking in its stark simplicity — a soldier's helmeted silhouette rendered almost entirely in black, face obscured by crossed strips of photographic film and a horizontal strip across the mouth, suggesting both censorship and the raw power of documentary imagery. A faint cityscape echoes at the bottom, grounding the figure in the war-torn Manhattan of the DMZ universe. Wood and Kristian Donaldson continue to make this Vertigo series one of the sharpest-looking war books on the stands in 2007.
