“Born to Kill”

In "Born to Kill," a 1951 Quality Comics gem, a young woman named Jan faces a test of loyalty when she moves in with her fiancé Jed’s mother, Mrs. Shane, to prove her worth. As tensions rise and the older woman’s frailty seems suspiciously convenient, Jan begins to suspect the truth behind the illness—only to find herself caught in a web of deception that threatens her marriage before it even begins. The story unfolds with quiet menace, drawn with sharp detail by Lin Streeter.

Jed tells his girlfriend Jan they can’t marry because he must care for his invalid mother. Jan says she can help out; the dubious Mrs. Shane says Jan should move in with them before the wedding as a test. The older woman works Jan mercilessly; Jan suspects Mrs. Shane isn’t really as helpless as she claims. Jan tries to trick Mrs. Shane into revealing her true state of health by starting a fire, but this doesn’t work. However, Jed overhears his mother telling Jan that she’ll never allow her son to get married and leave her. Jed and Jan wed and Mrs. Shane has a “miraculous recovery.”
