The Destro miniseries was conceived as part of the landmark publishing collaboration between Hasbro and Skybound/Image Comics that produced the Energon Universe — a shared continuity placing G.I. Joe and Transformers under one roof for the first time at a major independent publisher. Writer Dan Watters, whose prior work ranged from creator-owned titles like Coffin Bound to Marvel's Loki, was recruited by Skybound executive editor Ben Abernathy to helm the series alongside regular artist Andrei Bressan and colorist Adriano Lucas; for issue #3 specifically, Bressan was replaced by guest artist Andrea Milana — best known for the concurrent Cobra Commander miniseries — who stepped in to maintain the monthly shipping schedule without disrupting the visual language of the Energon Universe. All five issues were subsequently collected in the trade paperback Destro Vol. 1: The Enemy, released December 4, 2024.
