The Destro miniseries was announced in March 2024 as the last of four initial G.I. Joe miniseries — following Duke, Cobra Commander, and Scarlett — all produced by Skybound Entertainment in collaboration with Image Comics and Hasbro. The series spun directly out of Cobra Commander #5, picking up with the newly cemented Cobra alliance and Destro's ambitions to dominate the Energon-altered arms market. British writer Dan Watters, known for Loki and Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!, publicly acknowledged he had not grown up as a G.I. Joe fan, framing the project as a fresh, outsider take on the character. Artist Andrei Bressan, previously known for Birthright and Dark Ride at Image, collaborated with colorist Adriano Lucas and letterer Rus Wooton to produce the five-issue run, which was later collected in the trade paperback Destro Volume 1: The Enemy in November 2024.
