From DC's Vertigo imprint comes the opening chapter of this three-part prestige series, written by Alisa Kwitney with art by Kent Williams and Michael Zulli. Kent Williams's painted cover sets an immediately arresting tone: a massive, shadowy hooded figure looms in the background, one enormous hand raised with an eye visible in its palm, while a struggling human figure below clutches at an enormous chained book — the whole composition radiating the weight of fate and forbidden knowledge. "Book One: Byzantium" promises the kind of lush, contemplative dark fantasy that Vertigo was delivering so compellingly in 1997.
