“Dennis vs the U.S. Army”

Dennis the Menace #37 delivers a double dose of mischief with two stories — "Dennis vs the U.S. Army!" and "Dennis in a Ghost Town!" — and the cover by Al Wiseman sets the tone perfectly. On the left panel, Dennis fires his slingshot with a gleeful "BONG!" that rattles a bewildered army sergeant's helmet, a tank looming in the background; on the right, a pint-sized cowboy Dennis sends a mustachioed outlaw reeling with a well-placed shot to the hat. For a dime in 1959, this Hallden issue offered readers twice the trouble from comics' most cheerfully unstoppable kid.
