Adam and Katar travel to Kalador to track Despero, but find that he and the entire population of the planet are gone. Meanwhile, the Thanagarians are preparing for an attack by the Rannians led by Alanna. Despero, now on Rann, uses Sardath, who has been believed dead, to build a giant Zeta Beam projector which Despero uses to transport the Nth Metal core of the Thanagarian moon of Ryngor, which causes Ryngor to explode and rain down death on Thanagar.
