About this Issue

Issue #5 of the 2025 Deadpool/Wolverine ongoing delivers the central narrative gut-punch of the entire series: what readers believed to be a Stryfe-driven apocalypse plot is revealed at the issue's close to be Apocalypse himself, operating from within Stryfe's body — a twist that recontextualizes every scene of villainy across the preceding four chapters. By positioning two of Marvel's most durable '90s X-villains in this nested-identity reveal, Benjamin Percy builds a deliberate conceptual bridge to classic X-Men event storytelling, particularly the 1992 crossover 'X-Cutioner's Song' and the mythology surrounding Apocalypse's history of consuming host bodies. The issue also deepens the nanite-based mind-control framework that enslaves both Wolverine and Deadpool as Horsemen, making it the pivot point of a ten-issue story designed to serve the post-Krakoa 'From the Ashes' editorial era and bring new readers into the X-line's continuity through an accessible but mythology-rich action thriller.

History

The Deadpool/Wolverine series launched in January 2025 as part of Marvel's X-Men: From the Ashes publishing initiative, which rebuilt the X-line after the conclusion of the Krakoa era. Writer Benjamin Percy — who had already steered Wolverine and X-Force through the Krakoan period — was paired with artist Joshua Cassara, his former collaborator on X-Force, making this a reunion of a well-established creative team. Percy publicly teased the series as a 'cousin' to a '90s X-Men storyline, with issue #1 strongly implying a spiritual kinship with 'X-Cutioner's Song,' and the Apocalypse connection confirmed at issue #5's conclusion revealed that the series also ties into the concurrent Age of Revelation crossover event.
