About this Issue

Deadpool/Wolverine #2 (February 12, 2025) is a chapter in the first ongoing series to team the two characters as equal co-leads in the post-Krakoa Marvel era, arriving on the direct wave of enthusiasm generated by the 2024 blockbuster film. Its primary historical contribution at the issue level is the first appearance of Director Talyn, the ONE commander whose mind-control gambit over Deadpool drives the series' central conflict. The issue also advances the re-introduction of Stryfe — confirmed across subsequent issues to be possessed by Apocalypse — as the overarching villain of the run, deepening the long-running mythology connecting Deadpool, Wolverine, Maverick, and the X-Men's broader cast of adversaries. As the second chapter of a series explicitly positioned to bridge comic-reading newcomers lured in by the movie with veteran X-readers, it represents Marvel's most deliberate attempt in the mid-2020s to make this pairing a permanent ongoing fixture rather than a recurring mini-series novelty.

History

The series was conceived and developed before the 2024 film's release, though Marvel timed its launch — January 1, 2025 — to capitalize on the cultural momentum the movie created. Writer Benjamin Percy, who had maintained an unbroken tenure writing Wolverine for Marvel since his 2017 audio drama Wolverine: The Long Night, reunited with artist Joshua Cassara, his collaborator from their acclaimed Krakoan-era X-Force run and X Lives/X Deaths of Wolverine. Percy, Cassara, and editor Mark Basso aligned on a tone they described as a 'gonzo 80s action movie' template — perpetual forward momentum, large-scale set pieces, and a tonal balance between Deadpool's comedy and Wolverine's brutalism. Issue #2, titled 'Badlands,' arrived February 12, 2025, with Alessandro Cappuccio providing variant cover art alongside Cassara's main cover.
