About this Issue

Daredevil #5 (vol. 5, 2016) closes out the 'Chinatown' arc — the opening chapter of Charles Soule and Ron Garney's extended run — and cements Blindspot (Sam Chung) as a genuine, recurring presence in Matt Murdock's world rather than a one-arc curiosity. The issue completes a five-part story that repositioned Matt as a prosecutor rather than a defense attorney, a status-quo shift that would ripple across Soule's entire tenure on the title. As the finale of the first collected volume, it serves as a gateway read for the longest unbroken Daredevil run of the post-Secret Wars era, one that eventually stretched into the renumbered 'Legacy' issues.

History

The issue was produced under the All-New, All-Different Marvel initiative, a company-wide relaunch following Secret Wars, with Axel Alonso as Editor-in-Chief and Sana Amanat and Charles Beacham as the book-level editors. Charles Soule, himself a practicing attorney, brought an unusually grounded legal perspective to the title, establishing Matt Murdock in the District Attorney's office — a deliberate departure from his decades-long identity as a defense lawyer. Ron Garney's noir-inflected, high-contrast artwork (colored by Matt Milla) defined the visual identity of the run from the outset, and the 'Chinatown' arc was subsequently collected as Daredevil: Back in Black, Vol. 1.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Charles Soule, pencils and inks by Ron Garney, colors by Matt Milla, letters by Clayton Cowles; editors Sana Amanat and Charles Beacham.
  • Concludes the five-issue 'Chinatown' arc (Daredevil vol. 5, #1–5), published under the All-New, All-Different Marvel banner following Secret Wars.
  • The issue's story title is 'Salvation at Hand'; it resolves the Tenfingers plotline with the death of Tenfingers and the disbanding of the Church of the Sheltering Hands.
  • Blindspot (Sam Chung) — a Chinese-American immigrant and self-taught inventor of an invisibility suit trained by Daredevil — appears as a key supporting character; his first appearance was in All-New, All-Different Point One #1, with the full 'Chinatown' arc serving as his extended introduction to readers.
  • Matt Murdock is established in this arc as an Assistant District Attorney (prosecutor), reversing his traditional role as a defense attorney — a major character-status change carried through Soule's entire run.
  • The issue shipped with a 'Women of Power' variant cover illustrated by Sara Pichelli, part of a line-wide Marvel promotional variant program.
  • Elektra does not appear in this issue; her role in the Soule/Garney run begins in issue #6.
  • The arc was collected in trade paperback as Daredevil: Back in Black, Vol. 1: Chinatown, which also reprints the Blindspot preview story from All-New, All-Different Point One #1.
