About this Issue

Daredevil #197 marks the debut of Yuriko Oyama, the young woman who would eventually become Lady Deathstrike — one of Marvel's most enduring female antagonists and Wolverine's most personal cybernetic foe. Her introduction here, as Lord Dark Wind's captive daughter seeking to escape her father's brutal code of honor, plants the seed of a character whose motivations are rooted in grief, betrayal, and obsession rather than pure villainy, a complexity that gave her lasting storytelling legs across the X-Men line and beyond. The issue also sits at a transitional moment in Daredevil's publication history: it opens Dennis O'Neil's post-Frank Miller Japan arc, directly threading the consequences of Elektra's death and Bullseye's paralysis into a new narrative chapter. Its connections forward — to Alpha Flight #33, to Uncanny X-Men #205, to multiple film appearances — make it a genuine origin point for one of Bronze Age Marvel's most cross-title characters.

History

Dennis O'Neil, who had previously served as the book's editor and shepherded Frank Miller's celebrated run, took over scripting duties with issue #194, inheriting the Japan-bound Bullseye storyline that Miller had set in motion. Issue #197, titled 'Journey,' was produced under editor Linda Grant with Jim Shooter as editor-in-chief, and features a notably fractured artistic team: William Johnson handled the bulk of the penciling, while Larry Hama drew pages 2–6 — a section widely attributed by readers to deadline pressure — with Klaus Janson and the young Mike Mignola sharing inking duties. Mignola, fresh out of the California College of the Arts and just beginning his professional career at Marvel in 1983, was among the inkers on this issue at what was effectively the start of his industry work; he would go on to create Hellboy a decade later. Bill Sienkiewicz, whose cover work on Daredevil during this period remained a visual highlight, provided the striking Bullseye-focused cover.
