The plot involves complex spy tradecraft including hidden microfilm, rigged explosives, and double-crosses among the intelligence operatives. Raymond navigates encounters with fellow agents and adversaries in hotel rooms and city locations while attempting to secure the classified materials and complete his dangerous mission.
Neal Raymond, a skilled steeplejack, is assigned to work with Tom Carmichael, a difficult and stubborn coworker who seems to have it out for him—their first job together on a flagpole turns into a bitter fight high above the city. Months later, when the two are paired again on a dangerous coke oven job, a terrifying accident forces Raymond to risk his own life to save Carmichael from a deadly fall. What begins as mutual suspicion transforms into something far more human when both men face the real perils of their trade.
U.S. Customs Agent John Nichols infiltrates a narcotics smuggling ring run by Mike Lasher, posing as a corrupt official willing to move illegal drugs through a Southern port. Working undercover with fellow agent Bill Allen and equipped with hidden wire recorders, Nichols shadows the mob through multiple drug deliveries in New York, gathering evidence with each transaction. When a fresh shipment arrives from overseas, Nichols and his team are ready to finally bring the entire operation down.
