The story focuses on the struggles of these characters as they are hunted by a government agency while trying to control their powers and survive in a gritty, realistic world. Written by John Byrne with art by Paul Ryan, this volume gathers the first story arc of the series.
In "The Clinic," Dr. Randy O'Brien, a psychiatrist with his own hidden abilities, meets Dave Landers, a patient struggling with a painkiller overdose—and a secret that changes everything. As they’re brought together with five other paranormals in a mysterious treatment facility, the group begins to uncover unsettling truths about the Clinic’s true purpose. When Randy’s anti-body reveals the facility’s sinister agenda, the seven members must decide whether to stay or flee, setting off a tense journey into the unknown.
In "Runaways," Jo and the others race toward Dave’s trailer home when they’re ambushed by paranormals—Bloodhound, Shrapnel, Vice Versa, and agents tied to Voigt—sent by the Clinic and working with the C.I.A. With their unique abilities and growing trust, the group must push past fear and fight together to survive the attack.
In "Loose Ends," Dave, Jeff, and Stephanie flee across the Midwest, their escape complicated by relentless attacks from the Clinic's paranormals. When they stop in Sheboygan to visit Stephanie’s home, the danger follows—her husband, Chuck, has betrayed them, setting off a new ambush. The trio fights to survive, but the line between allies and enemies grows thinner with every step.
In "Wompus," Dave finds himself wrongly accused as a monstrous beast terrorizing a small town, forcing his team to unravel the truth behind the scare. When suspicion falls on him, the group devises a clever ruse to clear his name—only for Jeff to uncover a surprising twist in the form of a group of local teens behind the chaos.
In "Exorcism," Jo and the others seek answers about their powers by visiting an exorcist, but Scuzz walks away when the group agrees to the visit—doubting the path they're on. The journey leads them down a road that proves to be a dead end, leaving their questions unanswered.
In "Revenge," Scuzz, recovering from a brutal beating by a gang of bikers, takes a dangerous path of retribution after being left behind on the road. As the D.P. 7 team splits to handle separate missions, Scuzz’s journey from victim to vigilante unfolds in quiet fury, culminating in a name—*the Scorcher*—and a reckoning he won’t forget.
In "Kidnapped," the D.P. 7 team is fractured as agents close in, targeting each member one by one. With Scuzz already taken, Randy, Jeff, and Charly find themselves caught in a web of surveillance and ambush, while Stephanie and Chuck’s fragile reunion turns dangerous when the agents strike at their home. The team’s bonds are tested as they’re pulled apart—each in a different place, each in danger—forcing them to survive the chaos before the next move.
In "The Hunt," the fragile safety of a family moment shatters when Dave and Lenore are ambushed after dropping off Stephanie’s children. With Randy and Jeff already taken, and Lenore now in custody, Dave must flee through the shadows—running not just from agents, but from the growing dread that the hunt is only beginning.
In "Dream," six captured paranormals face surreal, memory-warping visions crafted by Hackbarth and Charne inside the Clinic, where reality bends and the line between past and present blurs. As each struggles through their own fabricated dreams, the true nature of their captivity begins to unravel in ways no one expected.
