The series was written throughout its run by Alan McElroy, a Hollywood screenwriter whose credits at the time included Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and who was simultaneously developing the screenplay for the 1997 Spawn theatrical film — making Curse of the Spawn a rare case of the same writer shepherding a comic property across both the page and the screen simultaneously. Penciler Dwayne Turner and inker Danny Miki handled the visuals for the issue, the same core art team that carried the series from its debut. Issue #5 is dedicated to Dr. D. Bruce Carr, though no public editorial context for that dedication has been documented online. The issue was published by Image Comics under the Todd McFarlane Productions imprint in December 1996.
