A young man named Johnny Lash is accused of killing the governor while trying to escape jail, but Raines uncovers evidence that the real culprit is a man using a Kanawi hunting knife made of stone thousands of years old. The story also includes a secondary tale titled "Two-Gun Lil," in which a woman at a saloon is waiting for a mysterious character to arrive, drawing the attention and romantic interest of various patrons seeking to impress her.
Arizona Raines and his companion Spurs stumble upon a nameless village held hostage by the notorious bandit Pedro Mortez, who's barricaded himself in the heavily defensible Terror Canyon while evading the U.S. Cavalry. When a direct military assault ends in disaster, Arizona devises a cunning plan to turn Mortez's own superstitions and paranoia against him, using the legend of a mysterious panther prowling the canyon to sow terror among the bandit's ranks. As the scheme unfolds, Arizona must navigate the deadly canyon and confront Mortez face-to-face to free the village from his iron grip.
