A slave (Chambers) and a slaveholder's son (Thomas Driscoll) were switched as infants, and grew up together, with Chambers being called on to defend Thomas Driscoll as Thomas descended into a life of crime. Eventually murdering Judge York Driscoll, Thomas is discovered via the fingerprinting hobby of a lawyer and found guilty, whereupon Thomas and Chambers are returned to their rightful roles in life over 20 years later.
